Two-time IPL tittle winning captain Gautam Gambhir steps down as a captain for Delhi Daredevil franchise and also decided not to take a single rupee from the franchise. He became the first player of IPL who will play for free. This decision came after DD lose the match against KXIP in the home ground, Feroz Shah Kotla.

Gautam Gambhir was very good with the bat when he plays for KKR. Both the IPL tittle that KKR has won are under the captaincy of Gambhir. Almost every season, he was among top 5 players in the race of orange cap (belongs to higher run getter of IPL). Earlier, Gambhir requested KKR not to retain him in the auction so that he can play for his home franchise. He said that he wants to lift IPL trophy for DD, but the things are not going the way he thought.
“I take a full responsibility for the position we are in. And looking at the position, I have decided to step down as captain. Iyer will take over. I still feel we have the team to turn thing around this IPL. It was absolutely my decision. The management didn’t pressurize me at all. It was the right time to step down as a captain,” Gambhir said in the press conference in New Delhi.
Gautam Gambhir took this decision after continuous loose in this season of VIVO IPL. Out of six games, Gambhir’s Delhi Daredevil managed to win only one game. The team is loitering at the bottom of the points table, with 5 loses in 6 games. Gambhir started well in this season by fabulous 55(42 balls) run knock against KXIP (Kings XI Punjab), unfortunately, DD lost the game by 5 wickets. But since after that the left-handed opener is struggling to get runs. In the next four games Gambhir did not crossed the mark of 20 runs. He managed only 30 runs in 4 innings which include 15, 8, 3 and 4.
After this, Shreyas Iyer said “I want to thank the management and my coaches for appointing me as a captain of the team. It is a great honor for me. In the first game as a captain, I will lead the team against Gambhir’s former team, Kolkata Knight Riders, on Friday, April 27.”
